As most of the health issues are associated with acute or chronic pain, pain killers are the most common medication for people. However, a prolonged use will have adverse effects on health. Due to these repercussions, people look for more safer and natural means to fight pain.
An Indian study identified tamarind as one of the plants with potent analgesic activity. Conventional analgesics include opioids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which though widely used, are not necessarily safe. Fortunately, there are medicinal plants that can be used as alternative remedies for pain relief.
The different parts of tamarind tree are used in traditional systems of medicine like Ayurveda.
Tamarind can be used to treat diseases like malaria, fever, stomach ache, wounds, diabetes, rheumatism, ulcers, sore throat, eye infections, and jaundice. In addition, specific parts of its leaves have their own set of biological activities. The roots and bark can relieve pain and eliminate helminths.
In the study, published in the Pharmacognosy, researchers evaluated the analgesic activity of tamarind root extracts on albino rats. The results of this study show that tamarind root extracts have potent analgesic as well as antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. With further studies, tamarind can be developed into an alternative remedy for pain and inflammatory disorders.
