Flu virus inhibited by Chinese herbal medicine

The influenza A virus is a major cause of seasonal diseases as drug therapies available for its treatment are limited. In a new study, researchers from Institute of Medicinal Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College in Beijing, China, found that a herbal pellet, Compound Yi-Zhi-Hao (CYZH), could potentially help treat influenza.

CYZH is composed of three dried raw materials: Ban lan gen (Isatis tinctoria, Isatidis radix); Yi zhi hao (Artemisia rupestris L., Artemisiae Rupestridis Herba); and Da qing ye (Isatis tinctoria, Isatidis folium). In the study published in Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B, researchers showed that CYZH possessed anti-influenza properties along with virus, protein inhibitors. CYZH could also protect body cells from oxidative damage.

Currently available treatments for influenza are limited; viruses causing the flu become immune to the treatment. Alternative medicines such as CYZH offer a more natural concoction of medicines that show promise in eliminating diseases.
