strategic ambulance placement

People are the key assets in a developing nation like India. However, a country like that, which homes a population of about 132 crores, has a distinctive number of 130,000 deaths annually. A significant number of deaths are attributed to road accidents.

India has overtaken China in the world’s worst road traffic accident rate, with one accident being reported every minute and 16 deaths every hour. According to the statistics, nearly 35 percent of all road accidents occur between 3 and 9 pm.

Since the transportation of a patient amid peak traffic is tedious, as a solution, emergency medical service providers have developed various strategies for ambulance placement to reduce the response time. However, routing problems and traffic congestion is one of the major factors hampering speedy assistance.

By identifying accident prone sites and with strategic ambulance placement, like positioning ambulances in the opposite direction of vehicular flow depending upon the time of the day, response times could be reduced significantly.

In order to fully understand the advantages of strategic ambulance placement, there is a lot to learn from countries like New Zealand who have implemented such systems and seen success in their response rates over a period.

Currently, in India, the average response time of a medical emergency vehicle is 9 minutes which can be further reduced by strategically placing the emergency vehicles and help save more lives.
